It’s no secret that choosing the perfect wedding venue and team of wedding suppliers is one of the biggest (and most important!) tasks on the planning to-do list. There can be some serious overwhelm when it comes to researching all of the different options to find the best fit for your dream wedding – from venue locations to floral design, photography and decor hire just to name a few. Talk about pressure!

In our previous chat, Joss and Ethan told us they’d locked in a venue and some of the key suppliers for their day. So we were keen to learn exactly how they went about scouting a location and booking their dream team, along with finding styling inspiration, communicating with suppliers and creating a concept for the big day.

If you’re currently an engaged couple planning your own wedding, keep reading for some insight into Joss and Ethan’s wedding planning experience so far, including a behind-the-scenes look at their stunning wedding venue and some practical planning tips to keep in mind for your own celebration.

When we last spoke to you guys, we shared your beautiful proposal story and engagement shoot. But now the countdown is officially on until the big day! How are you staying organised with everything that needs to get done before the wedding?

I found the initial planning phase really easy and fun– choosing our venue, booking suppliers, picking my dress, a florist, etc, as I already had a pretty clear idea of what and who I wanted to be involved.

But now that we are a few months out, the planning is getting down to the finer details which I’m struggling to find the motivation to plan – I’ve been a bit lazy, to be honest! But I think that’s partly due to the fact that my mum has turned out to be an amazing wedding planner and she has great taste, so I trust her 100% to take care of those finer details.

I also have a wedding planning folder that has a checklist of what should be done at each stage of the process which has helped to keep me on track.

We’re super excited to learn more about the location and team you’ve chosen to bring your dream day to life. So let’s start with the venue! We know that finding the perfect wedding venue is usually one of the first major decisions on the wedding planning to-do list – what were some of your priorities when looking for a venue, and where/how did you do your research?

Our venue was the first thing we booked, which took a lot of the stress out of planning straight away. We wanted somewhere relaxed but elegant, fresh and well-lit with an indoor/outdoor feel and somewhere that wasn’t too far out of town to make transport easy. We also wanted to book a venue that we hadn’t already seen a handful of weddings held at, something a bit new and different!

So with that being said – which venue have you chosen for the big day?

We chose Ancora which was a no-brainer for us – it was the first venue we looked at and we booked it on the spot! The team there made it all so easy.

What made you choose this venue?

It met all of our criteria and we loved that the venue is a beautiful blank canvas that you can style any way you like. We love the high ceilings, bright natural light and the fact that it sits right on the water. The venue is so central to town but it almost feels secluded – it has the most relaxed feel!

I think our favourite part of Ancora is the fact that it is right on the water so we had the opportunity to arrange a sunset boat cruise with Tweed Eco Cruises to transport our guests from the ceremony an hour down the river to our reception. Also, the fact that Taverna caters for Ancora had us sold! We absolutely love their food! We went there for our tasting recently and it was incredible.

It’s no secret that we have an amazing selection of wedding suppliers based here on the Tweed Coast. Have you locked in any other key suppliers for your day?

Yes – I’m so excited to have such talented suppliers involved in our day! It’s taken a lot of the stress out of planning knowing we can trust them to do an amazing job.

I am so excited to have Sarah from Florals and Co taking care of our flowers; her work is so beautiful and I’ve always wanted her as my wedding florist!

We have Jason from Lucas and Co as our photographer and Nathan Lapham as our videographer. These guys are both so talented and have such a beautiful eye for photography – especially weddings and couples!

Can you talk us through your process when it came to researching and booking suppliers? How did you narrow down your options to find the best fit for your day?

I have been fortunate enough to meet some amazingly talented and creative people through the modelling industry, which helped a lot when it came to wedding planning as I already knew who I wanted to use for hair and makeup, photography, bridesmaids’ dresses, etc.

I just wanted to book suppliers who I could trust to do an amazing job without too much direction from my end (again with my slightly “relaxed” – but really just a bit lazy – attitude to wedding planning!). The fact that I trust their creative ability means I’ve been happy to let them create ideas of their own and leave a lot of the decisions to them – their ideas are better than mine anyway! And it means less decision making and stress for me which is a win-win.

We can’t wait to see the end result from all of your planning! Where did you look for styling inspiration and how did you come up with your styling concept – can you give us a taste of what to expect from the big day?

I’ve basically always had the same taste in styling, colours, décor etc so it was quite easy for me to decide on a theme/styling concept. An important thing for Ethan and I was that we wanted the day to feel like “us”. We want it to have a relaxed, romantic feel – but also elegant and a little fancy because it is our big day after all!
