Unpacking your wedding style

When we talk about your wedding style, we’re referring to the overall “theme” or vibe of your day. Pinpointing your wedding style is important because it will influence all of the decisions you make moving forward – from choosing your venue and colour palette to organising your flowers, decor, music, catering, bridesmaid gowns and more.

Rather than jumping on a specific trend, it’s a good idea to ensure your wedding style reflects you and your partner. This means it will remain timeless for years to come, rather than dating quickly.

So, where should you begin with pinpointing your wedding style? Here are 5 simple steps towards narrowing down the perfect theme for your special day.

1. Brainstorm together.

Sit down with your partner for a brainstorming session to get the ball rolling! Discuss what your dream wedding looks like, what the atmosphere feels like, and the experience you want to create for your guests. You might find the following prompts helpful:

-What’s your signature style? Think about your favourite colours, the outfits in your wardrobe and even the artwork in your home. Is your style chic and minimal, or more colourful and eclectic?

-What are your top priorities for the day? Try to narrow this down to 3-5 key priorities shared between you and your partner.

-How can you make it personal? For example: If you guys are serious foodies, you could design your day around a delicious long lunch. Or, if you love to travel, you could plan a Mediterranean-inspired reception as a nod to your favourite European holiday.

2. Put it into words.

Now that you have some ideas floating around, see if you can choose some key words that best describe your vision. Think: modern, luxurious, bohemian, coastal, minimal, rustic or glam. Having these words in mind will help you find relevant inspiration and communicate ideas with your different wedding suppliers.

3. Choose your colour palette.

Next, choose a colour palette that will become the foundation for your wedding styling. A good rule of thumb is to choose 1-2 main colours and 2-3 secondary colours, with some of these colours being neutrals.

4. Find and cull inspiration.

Now it’s time to fire up your Pinterest button and start collecting and culling ideas that reflect your theme. We recommend creating seperate boards for the different elements of your day (like flowers, cake, stationery) and a master board with your favourite 1-2 images from each category. You can read our complete guide on using Pinterest to plan your wedding here!

5. Create a mood board.

Finally, create a simple mood board that captures your overall wedding style. Include a selection of your favourite inspiration images along with your chosen colour palette to create a cohesive look. You can refer back to this mood board throughout your wedding planning journey, and send it to your wedding suppliers to ensure everyone is on the same page.
