Sarah Head :: Preparing your song list for the perfect wedding party

Coming up with the perfect song list to suit your wedding day vibe
By Sarah Head (Live music & DJ sets)

The importance of music on your special day should never be over-looked. Live music creates the perfect, unique atmosphere while providing your guests with an invaluable source of entertainment over the entire course of the day.

When creating the perfect song list for your wedding day vibe or theme, the most important thing is to have a clear idea of what style of music you and your guests enjoy, and identify what would best suit your overall vibe. For example, your love of house/disco music might not exactly suit your vineyard wedding setting – so perhaps try drawing inspiration from your venue or wedding stylist as to what style would work best to create a seamless vibe.

Whether it is classical, contemporary, old school or dance/top 40, music tastes can vary greatly, so be sure to select someone who you feel is similar to your style expectations. If you’re unsure of your preferred style, try listing some of your favourite songs or artists to give to your music professional – they’ll then be able to work out exactly what sort of music will have you smiling and dancing well into the night. I always offer this personalized service to my clients, as just one way of making sure the entire day is as perfect as you have imagined.

Arguably the most important aspect of wedding music is selecting your specific songs for the
memorable moments – like walking down the aisle, signing the registry and your first dance.

For a unique moment, you could also ask your singer or band if they have these songs on their repertoire to play live, or if you prefer, ask them to play the original version. I would suggest thinking about these songs from the moment you start planning your wedding. They are, after all, songs that are important to you and resonate with you and your journey as a couple, so it’s best to put some time into thinking about your choices. If you’re stuck for ideas, ask your music professional to send you through some example songs (or songs on their repertoire) that you could select from. While traditionally these songs are love ballads (and technically the first dance was usually a 3:4 waltz song), most couples these days are choosing a combination of ballads and upbeat love songs for the big moments – ultimately, it all comes down to personal preference – there’s no right or wrong answer.

Some popular wedding songs at the moment are:

Home – Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros

Thinking Out Loud – Ed Sheeran

How Long Will I Love You – Ellie Goulding

Love is Easy – McFly

While some people prefer to select unique songs that “no one else will use”, I believe the most important thing is to choose songs that you both absolutely love and mean something to you – so I wouldn’t let popularity deter your song choice at all!

The beauty of music is that one song can bring back one thousand memories – so remember, they’ll be songs you’ll cherish for the rest of your lives together. That’s exactly why I love doing what I do!

Great advice, thanks. The music creates the atmosphere for the night, so it is worth spending some time thinking about it.
