Behind the Scenes at Babalou: How this Elegant Beachfront Venue Became Kingscliff’s Best-Kept Secret!

Known for its sun-soaked beaches and relaxed coastal charm, it’s not hard to see why Kingscliff has fast become one of the most popular wedding destinations on the Tweed.

With unbeatable ocean views, quirky cafes and award-winning restaurants dotted along the foreshore, it’s little wonder this pocket of paradise has been attracting couples both locally and interstate to host their wedding day celebrations.

If you joined us for the recent Tweed Wedding Trail, you may already be familiar with the elegant beachfront space at Babalou – a boutique wedding and events venue situated above local hotspot, the Kingscliff Beach Hotel.

But what you might not know is that Babalou has undergone a pretty huge transformation over the years – evolving from an eclectic restaurant filled with pop art and vintage furniture to the stylish seaside venue that we know and love today.

Undergoing a complete renovation and rebrand in 2014, Babalou has quickly built a reputation as Kingscliff’s best-kept secret. This hidden gem is now a dedicated wedding and events space, featuring a contemporary Hamptons-meets-industrial interior, extensive food and beverage packages, and panoramic oceanfront views.

When it comes to truly iconic transformations, we think the journey of Babalou is one story well-worth sharing. If you’re currently hunting for the perfect beachfront venue on the Tweed Coast, keep reading as we sit down with venue manager Jodi for a behind-the-scenes look into the incredible evolution of Babalou!

For those who may not be familiar with Babalou’s beginnings, can you take us back to where it all began?

Back in the day, Babalou was a very unique restaurant that was known for its eclectic styling and furnishings, great food and cocktails. The venue sparked the interest of Channel 9 newsreader Alison Ariotti, who felt that Babalou was the perfect place to host her wedding – and we jumped at the chance to turn this into a “thing”. It initially started as a few weddings here and there, to now operating as a fully-fledged Weddings and Events centre.

What kind of transformation has Babalou seen over the years?

Babalou was originally styled in a very eclectic fashion – it had lots of mismatched vintage furniture, crazy art-work and pop art wall features. It was a great space, but the niche styling did limit the things we could achieve, as it was very busy and not everyone’s cup of tea!

In 2014, Taphouse began their plans for a multi-million dollar renovation of the Kingscliff Beach Hotel, and with that, Babalou received an amazing makeover. Now exuding a cool, coastal Hamptons-style mixed with industrial chic, Babalou reopened as a dedicated events space.

Our walls were painted white and we had brand new hardwood floors put down. Modern décor was added with rattan couches, white rattan chairs, white interlaced wire high bars with stools, fresh plants, and our famous banana leaf feature wall. We asked our friends over at Hampton Event Hire to make us some beautiful wooden trestle tables and voila – we were good to go!

Although it feels like a brand new space, I love that they kept some of the original fixtures – like the exposed rafter beams which are now adorned with festoon lights and are perfect for hanging installations. We also kept some of the old doors which have been fixed on the walls and become a feature in itself – these date back to the 1930’s, so it’s pretty special having that kind of history in there!

Babalou is often referred to as Kingscliff’s best-kept secret – what is it about your venue that sets it apart?

Babalou is the whole package, and for me the winning element is that ocean view. Team that up with a beautiful venue, great food and beverage, an exceptional events team and the beauty of Kingscliff as a whole – then you are sure to create a memorable occasion for both you and your guests.

Can you let us know what’s in store for future weddings and events at Babalou?

Babalou has some exciting new food and beverage packages coming soon, and we are really looking forward to the new Rowan Robinson Park to be opened up just across the road. This brand new development will be a perfect wedding ceremony option, and oh-so-close to our venue! Guests will be able to walk to Babalou after the ceremony conclusion and enjoy a drink at the Kingscliff Beach Hotel until the reception begins.
