8 Special Ways to Include Your Dad in Your Wedding!

Your wedding day is a huge milestone for you and your partner, but it’s a pretty special day for your family members too.

It’s no secret that weddings can be an especially emotional time for the father of the bride – after all, this is the first guy who ever loved you! So in celebration of Father’s Day today, we wanted to share some of the best ways to include your dad in your wedding day celebrations.

Along with the more traditional notion of walking you down the aisle, we reckon there are some other personal gestures worth including in your wedding. Keep reading for 8 of our favourite ways to show your dad how much he means to you on this milestone celebration, along with some tips on getting him involved in the wedding prep and pre-party planning!

Involve him in the wedding planning

When we think about wedding planning, it’s usually our mum or closest girlfriends that we choose to ask for help – but why not tap into your dad’s talents, too?

Okay, so he may not be your go-to guy for choosing napkin colours or floral arrangements, but is he a bit of a handyman? A whiz with numbers? Or maybe even a serious foodie? Why not get him on board with creating a DIY backdrop for your day, budget planning, or attending your menu tastings?

Whatever it might be, think about how you can use your dad’s strengths throughout your wedding prep. Whether he admits it or not, your dad will secretly love the fact that you still want his opinion and help, and will appreciate being involved in the lead up to your big day.

Organise a father/daughter first look

We’re huge fans of sentimental first look photos, but if you don’t want to do a first look with your partner, why not plan one with your dad?

Ask your photographer for their help capturing a father-daughter first look, for some super sweet (and emotional!) images. Nothing will beat the look on his face when he sees you glowing on the morning of your wedding, and we reckon it’s a moment you’ll definitely want to look back on, too.

Include his signature drink

Does your dad have a signature drink? Maybe he’s known for his love of a particular brand of beer, late-night glass of whisky, or even a sneaky mojito from time to time. Whatever it might be, dedicate a drink to your dad on your wedding bar menu (and make sure you steal him away for a cheers during the night!).

Gift him a boutonniere

Boutonnieres aren’t just for the groomsmen! Surprise your dad with a boutonniere from your florist to signify him as an important member of your bridal party (and be the one to attach it to his lapel to make the moment extra special).

We also love this idea for grandads, step-dads, future father-in-law, brothers, or any other special men who have had an influence over the person you are today.

Travel to your ceremony together

At a moment when your nerves are at an all-time high, sometimes all you need is some last minute reassurance and wise words of advice from your dad!

Travel to your ceremony together (in style, of course) to stay cool, calm and collected in those final minutes before walking down the aisle. Because what could be a better way to settle those nerves than a good old dad joke or two?

Write him a letter

Surprise your dad with a heartfelt, handwritten letter on the morning of your wedding to say thanks for everything he’s done. Be sure to include your favourite memories together, things you love about him, life lessons learned, and the different ways he’s helped you over the years. Bonus tip: read him the letter out loud, and make sure you guys have some tissues at the ready – this one could get teary!

Hold a memento

If your dad can’t be with you for your wedding day, keep a memento from him close to your heart throughout the celebration. We love the idea of adding a personal keepsake like a handkerchief, cufflinks or even a photo to your bouquet before you walk down the aisle, so you can still share this beautiful moment together.

Share a father-daughter dance

Is there anything sweeter than a father-daughter dance? We think this timeless tradition is definitely one worth honouring. Make the moment extra memorable by choosing a personal song that holds a special meaning to you both, or even sharing dance lessons before the big day for a fun experience you guys can remember. Don’t forget to ask your photographer or videographer to capture the moment so you can look back on it for a lifetime!
